Neneh Mariann Karlsson was born on March 10, 1964. She received the last name "Cherry" from her stepfather, Don Cherry, an American Jazz trumpeter who helped raise her. At 14, Neneh dropped out of school to move to London and pursue a musical career. There she joined multiple bands including The Cherries, New Age Steppers, Rig Rig & Panic, and Float Up CP.
In 1989, Neneh Cherry's first album, "Raw Like Sushi," was released. Her other solo albums include "Homebrew" and "Man." In 2006, Cherry, her husband, their daughter and DJ Karmil founded a new band called cirKus.
